Formula and units

Gsum = Prx − Ptx + FSPL + Ltx + Lrx + Lother; Gequal = Gsum/2; Gunknown = Gsum − Greference

Equal-gain mode assumes identical TX/RX gains. Reference mode fixes a known TX antenna gain and estimates the RX antenna. Deficit/surplus = measured − expected power.

Worked example

With the 5.8 GHz / 10 km link example and measured −65 dBm, the difference is −9.3 dB. Under equal-gain assumptions the effective estimate is 22.4 dBi per antenna.

Assumptions and limitations

This is not laboratory-measured gain. A deficit does not prove a manufacturing defect. Confirm RSSI represents signal power, per-chain versus combined reporting, AGC conventions, MIMO power allocation and reference-gain validity. Unmodelled path loss is absorbed into the gain estimate.

Checks to investigate

These are checks, not diagnoses. Confirm each against measurements and installation conditions.
